Hare and Rabbit

On a drive into Clark Valley on Rockhouse Canyon Road, we stopped when we saw a hare, a Black-tailed Jackrabbit, Lepus californicus, in front of some Honey Mesquite, 10 or 15 yards away. The hare stood like a statue. We reached for our camera on which, fortunately, we had mounted a fast telephoto lens.

The mood didn't last for more than a few minutes, however. A Cottontail rabbit, apparently hungry, appeared. When you are a rabbit, or a hare, who eats first is important. Our Lepus californicus lifted his black tail and hurried to the nearest greenery.
